Aluminum Alloys 2000 Series

2000 series - Copper is the principal alloying element in this group. These alloys require solution heat-treatment to obtain optimum properties; in the heat treated condition mechanical properties are similar to, and sometimes exceed, those of mild steel. In some instances artificial aging is employed to further increase the mechanical properties. This treatment materially increases yield strength, with attendant loss in elongation; its effect on tensile (ultimate) strength is not as great. The alloys in the 2000 series do not have as good corrosion resistance as most other aluminum alloys and under certain conditions they may be subject to intergranular corrosion. Therefore, these alloys in the form of sheet are usually clad with a high-purity alloy or a magnesium-silicon alloy of the 6000 series which provides galvanic protection to the core material and thus greatly increases resistance to corrosion. Alloy 2024 is perhaps the best known and most widely used aircraft alloy.

(2) For purposes of determining conformance to these limits, an observed value or a calculated value obtained from analysis is rounded off to the nearest unit in the last right-hand place of figures used in expressing the specified limit, in accordance with AN Standard Rules for Rounding Off Numerical Values (ANSI Z25.1).

(3) Analysis is regularly made only for the elements for which specific limits are shown, except for unalloyed aluminum. If, however, the presence of other elements is suspected to be, or in the course of routine analysis is indicated to be in excess of the specified limits, further analysis is made to determine that these other elements are not in excess of the amount specified.

(4) The aluminum content for unalloyed aluminum not made by a refining process is the difference between 100.00 percent and the sum of all other metallic elements present in amounts of 0.010 percent or more each, expressed to the second decimal.

T351

Applies to plate and rolled or cold-finished rod or bar, die or ring forging and rolled rings when stretched the indicated amounts after solution heat treatment or after cooling from an elevated temperature shaping process. The products receive no further straightening after stretching.

T3511

Applies to extruded rod, bar, shapes and tube and to drawn tube when stretched the indicated amounts after solution heat treatment or after cooling from an elevated temperature shaping process. These products may received minor straightening after stretching to comply with standard tolerances.
